Difference between Crack Sealing and Crack Filling

12-12-2024

Asphalt is a mixture of bitumen and aggregates like sand, gravel, or crushed stone. Asphalt surfaces can develop cracks due to expansion or contraction on exposure to extreme heat, freeze-thaw cycles, and excessive moisture. They can also generate cracks due to heavy traffic, aging, and expansion of tree roots that exert pressure on the asphalt pavement or underneath. To protect asphalt pavements, it is necessary to seal coat the asphalt pavements every 2 to 3 years.

The various types of cracks that can develop on asphalt surfaces include longitudinal cracking, edge cracking, alligator cracking and potholes. When cracks develop on the surface of the asphalt, it is necessary to take immediate action to prevent further expansion of the cracks. Crack sealing and crack filling are two different methods that can be used to fix the cracks. Let us explore the difference between crack sealing and crack filling, for making a proper selection.

Crack Filling

Purpose: Crack filling is used for cracks that are static i.e., the cracks that have stopped their movement or have minimal movement. These cracks are usually 0.25 cm wide.

Type of filler: Crack filling materials should be less flexible to maintain the bond between the affected areas. Usually, non-rubberized substances such as asphalt emulsions or liquid asphalt are used. For larger cracks, cold-patch or hot-patch asphalt is used.

Method: The crack is cleaned to remove loose asphalt, debris or any vegetation. When the crack is dry, the filler is poured into the cracks, to fill the entire crack. After the cracks are filled, the surface is levelled and smoothened to avoid tripping or damage to vehicles.

Crack Sealing

Purpose: Crack sealing is used for dynamic cracks i.e., the cracks that are still experiencing movement or shifting in the pavement. These cracks are usually 0.5-2 inches wide.

Type of filler: Crack Sealing materials should be flexible to accommodate the movement of the cracks. Usually, rubberized substances such as rubberized asphalt and polymer-modified asphalt are used.

Method: The crack is cleaned with high-pressure air or wire brush, thereby removing dirt, debris and moisture. The sealant is applied on the surface without filling it completely.

Crackfilling is a cost-effective option when compared to cracksealing. However, crack sealing is the only effective approach for cracks that are dynamic.

Closing Remarks

Thus, crack filling and crack sealing can help in restoring the efficiency of asphalt surfaces. These procedures help in preventing the entry of water beneath the surface of the asphalt and the entry of sand, and debris on the cracks, which affects the contraction and expansion of the asphalt.
